How to Choose H.S. Classes

"When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years." Mark Twain

It is now time for Creel Valley High School and Junior High students to think about the classes that they are going to take next fall.

Just as employers want workers with certain skills, colleges want students who have taken certain courses. Many of these courses can only be taken after passing basic subjects like algebra. In fact, most schools view algebra as the gatekeeper to college.

Research shows that students who take algebra early in high school are more likely to attend college than those who don't. After passing algebra, you can take geometry, trigonometry, chemistry and physics before finishing high school. Since all those subjects are covered on the ACT/SAT, you should score well on college entrance exams and open more doors to college.

The classes you take in grades 9-12 will count toward your GPA, your high school graduation requirements, and college entrance requirements. Register for challenging classes to better prepare for college.

For admission into Nebraska universities, you must take the following high school courses: eight semesters of English, all of which must include intensive reading and writing experience; eight semesters of mathematics, which must include geometry and two years of algebra, plus one year which builds on algebra; six semesters of social sciences, these must include at least one year of American and/or world history and one additional unit of history, government and/or geography; six semesters of natural sciences; and two to four years of the same foreign language.

There's no substitute for taking challenging courses and working hard in all subjects. Just keep in touch with the counselor's office to make sure you're taking the classes you need for entry into the college of your choice and are on the right track for graduating from CVHS.
